Vermi Compost & Organic Manure

new-picture-5To develop the response of the rural and tribal communities towards the use of organic farming, Vermiculture & Vermicompost is the main focal theme of the programme. It aims at inculcation scientific temperaments and environmental awareness among the SHGs, Science & Geography Teachers, Students, tribal & rural farmers as well as field based orientation. Compost work can be done year – round, under in schools, offices and homes. It is a natural method of recycling nutrients in food wastes without odor. This resulting composting is known in all level worldwide. The objectives of the programme is to generate awareness among the  people, organizations & resource persons in the area of using worms for waste utilizations and soil enrichment.

All the people do not have year round work so it will be providing the work round the year, so that it is creating wealth from farm waste. The SHGs can take up the Vermicompost as Income Generating activities. Further it will also create employment.  With the application of Vermicompost at least the crop production will be increased.

Awareness programme like Lecture-cum-Demonstration, Meet the Experts were organized in 17 High schools of Baripada, Betnoti, Kuliana, Bangriposi, Saraskana & Barsahi Block of Mayurbhanj. In the teachers training programme training were imparted to teachers on Preparation & Maintenance of Vermicompost pit, bio fertilizer production, green manure & other organic manure preparation. Total 69 teachers from 69 high Schools of Baripada, Betnoti, Kuliana, Bangriposi, Saraskana, Samakhunta & Barsahi Block of Mayurbhanj were participated in the training programme. Along with theoretical training, the trainees were also taken to the Vermicompost unit at the Soil Chemist Office, Baripada to give practical exposure.

This project was very helpful to the community in rural and tribal areas to gain the awareness level pertaining to Vermicompost and organic farming and to have their own compost yard and they can improve the soil conditions by using the compost materials

Strengthening Farming Community Institution

new-picture-7

With the objective to strengthen farmers and to organize them into groups a farmers club was formed with support from NABARD at Ghiajodi village of Saraskana block. Now total 18 farmers were the members of the club. After the formation of the club a Base Level Orientation Training (BLOT) was organized to train the members of the club and other farmers for to imparting information and providing them knowledge on various Agriculture Schemes, Bank credit facilities and horticulture schemes.

The organisation is constantly monitoring the club to widespread their activities. Recently the club mmembers are engaged to prepare a Village Credit Data to ensure the availability of crop loan to all BPL farmers.

Community Mobilization for Food Security Management

Sakti Sikha has sought to address the high food insecurity among the marginal and landless farmers through integrated efforts by encourage taking up community farming by jointly cultivating large area of land including wasteland through share resources as seed tools and labour, combining education for rights with efforts for conservation, regeneration and development of land and water resources. The present effort seeks to address the survival and subsistence needs of the more vulnerable families in villages through community efforts in means of advocacy & capacity building.

SS provides for strengthening linkages between the farmer community and the government. It promotes grain banks, horticultural practices, organic and community farming.

new-picture-8Grain Banks: Sakti Sikha encourages communities to save and deposit food grains in community grain banks to keep a check on year-long food insecurity and seasonal migration, while reducing dependency on money lenders and addressing problems as malnutrition and starvation. During the harvest time, people are encouraged to contribute food grains to the community grain bank, so as to be able to fall back on the grain bank at the time of scarcity.

new-picture-9Horticulture: A wide range of issues and problems affect the small and marginal farmers and constraints to have an access to the Minimum Support Prices (MSP). Farmers get very few of what the consumer pays for the product, so also has inadequate access to Credit and Marketing services for  agricultural produces.

SS encourage the farmers and facilitate them with horticulture initiatives to promote crop diversity under different agro-climatic conditions. Using a range of crops allows the possibility of multiple cropping thereby enhancing returns per unit of land, generating employment and ensuring year-round food security to small and marginal farmers.

Soil Management & Conservation Approach

Sakti Sikha in its major activity, to sustain agriculture & to conserve soil environment implemented project for Outreach Campaign on Soil Management. The project was sponsored by Dept. of Sc. & Tech. Govt. of India.

new-picture-10The main target group of this project was the Farmers, Women SHGs, Teacher & Students. A series of awareness, training & demonstration, advocacy activities was organized among
the target groups to advocate and capacity building on soil health, pollution, fertility, erosion & conservation of soil and optimum utilization of Bio fertilizers amongst farmers and SHG members the stress was on Soil Management. In Mayurbhanj 80% of the soil is acidic in nature. So it is very important for the farmers to understand the nature & characteristics of soil and manage it for sustainable agricultural development.

soil-1Various activities like Survey & data collection on ‘Prevailing soil management practices’, Youth Parliament on ‘Organic Farming for Effective Soil Management’, Lecture-cum-Demonstration on ‘Soil Sample Collection & its Management’ Vad-Vivad programme on ‘Organic Farming vs Inorganic Farming’, Competition on ‘Tree Plantation and its Effect on Deforestation, Field Exposure visits for Farmers to Farm Science Centers, Public Campaign on ‘Soil as Wealth were organized during the programme to achieve the project objectives.

Bio-Organic Farming Programme

bio-farmIn sustainable agricultural practices organic farming creates a healthy, living soil that is less prone to erosion and moisture loss. Organic farming is one among the most priority areas of Sakti Sikha for improving the profitability in agriculture on sustainable basis.

Bio and Vermicompost units are extensively promoted to generate bio-fertilizer for organic farming. Farmers are trained and given demonstrations on the preparation and use of different types of organic compost, manure and pesticides. They are also introduced to other farmers who have successfully adopted these techniques. To support the promotion, techniques such as crop selection and rotation are used. The cost effective technologies like- Bio-compost units are initiated by SAKTI SIKHA as its preparation is usually done using local material such as normal wastes, crop residues, forest wastes and cow dung. SAKTI SIKHA encourages and made linkage between the Government line Department and 37 nos. of farmers to availing subsidy under various scheme of these department.

Support to ST/SC Farmers for Increase Production of Pulses &

Oil Seed And Access to Resources

SAKTI SIKHA understands that Pulses form almost an essential dietary component of the poor people. It has the unique potential of supplementing the protein deficiency. Pulses are the cheapest source of protein as compared to other source. At present, the production and productivity of these crops are far from being satisfactory. By virtue of which the poor farmers not getting much production and poor crops leads to low price back by selling.

SAKTI SIKHA supports the poor SC/ST farmers by providing them with Biofertilizer, Vermicompost, seeds, fertilizers and Micronutrients free of cost which will increase the productivity, maintain environmental balance and will increase the income of the poor families. Therefore the programme will be viable, economical and sustainable for increasing production apart from huge employment generation. The main feature of the programme is – the project will value added to production and soil with generation of more income.
